A day of tacking
25 June 2026
Today was our first real test of the “day sail” mode we will be entering in NYC. We also sailed on and off the anchor, a huge accomplishment that the Elissa really hadn’t done before. Because we have some time between now and our next mooring, we spent the day practicing manuevers - 3 (and a half) tacks in total, pretty fun to do on a 150 year old barque, especially when a single tack takes about 5 minutes and orchestral precision. We had observers, too; during our manueves the Kalmar Nyckel and Sagres passed by, both under motor (just sayin’). The look on the hive of small motorcraft around us when we started to spin around was also priceless. When this was done, we dropped anchor - and then did dishes for an hour. Needless to say, the planned movie did not happen and everybody went to bed early, preparing for a similar day tomorrow.
